A Rat??!! Today at my student observation in a Montessori school I noted the large cage near the sensorial room. Upon asking my student teacher what animal they had in their cage she squealed, “oh they’re Hot Dog and Twinkle Toes, the cutest ever rats. The kids love them!”
Strolling cautiously towards the cage I asked her why they didn’t have like a guinea pig, fish or birds. The director overheard me and came over to let me they’ve had guinea pigs but they were traumatized and nervous with the noise of classroom activity and children continually approaching the cage. Rats are naturally curious and love to be where the action is so they seem to be a perfect fit for a busy classroom. Who knew, right??
So, if you’re looking for a classroom pet, consider a rat.
